Sammanfattning

Random student drug tests (RSDT) are rare in Swedish schools. Using RSDT has been criticized by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate, the Department of Education, and the Swedish National Institute of Public Health. Some of the criticism derives from claims of lack of evidence of RSDT drug preventive effects. To examine validity of these claims, a questionnaire on drug use and attitudes to drugs was implemented amongst students (94% males) in a high school with RSDT and in four control high schools. Results showed that a higher proportion of students in the RSDT-school agreed that RSDT was a good method for reducing drug use and that the school’s drug education policy was good. Students from the RSDT-school had a less tolerant view of drug use. Fewer reported being interested in trying drugs compared to students in control schools. The results suggest that RSDT may have a drug preventive effect among male high school students.
