Geriatric syndromes (´geriatric giants´) could be regarded as homeostatic failure of complex systems. There is seldom a single factor causing the failure. The concept ´frailty´ has been introduced to illustrate indvidual patients´ biological age. The concept ´multimorbidity´ should be reserved for simultaneous presence of two or more chronic health problems in one person. An important challenge for future research and management of complex health problems in elderly people is i) to move from ´single disease management´ to ´multiple disease management´ and ii) to complete the conventional medical, organ-based work-up/treatment by repeated evaluation of different system- and functional domains. This analysis could be performed by the method comprehensive geriatric assessment.
