Sammanfattning

Skeletal muscle is the primary target tissue for insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, accounting for approximately 80% of whole body glucose uptake in response to insulin. Specific defects have been identified and described in the insulin signal transduction cascade, from the insulin receptor to the mediation of enhanced glucose transporter translocation to the plasma membrane and increased glucose uptake, in skeletal muscle from subjects with type 2 diabetes. This paper summarises the current understanding of the molecular mechanisms un derlying insulin resistance in skeletal muscle in subjects with type 2 diabetes.
