Sammanfattning
Management of violent and threatening situations on psychiatric wards is a daily experience for nurses. The article is aimed at nurses exposed to such situations in their day-to-day clinical practice. The article describes examples of such situations, and strategies for how staff can manage them in their everyday practice. The training consists of structured communication of the nurses’ experience in relation to the conflict situation. The communication strategies are a form of collegial support and are described in three sets of guidelines: peer-guided discussion, debriefing and defusing. When violent and threatening experiences are reviewed with colleagues, nurses do not feel isolated, but share experiences and - with colleagues - develop new methods of preventing violent behaviour.
