Sammanfattning

The age distribution of the population of Sweden, and of many other countries, is rapidly changing with an increasing proportion of old people and a decreasing proportion of young people as the result of low fertility and high and increasing life expectancy. Life expectancy in Sweden has been on the increase, largely without interruption, for 250 years at a rate that corresponds to two months per year. While the question is still open, current evidence suggests that the people of Sweden, and of many other countries, are not only living longer than they did previously but also that they are living longer with better health and fewer functional limitations. There are at present no indications that the increase in life expectancy is coming to an end. For how long this increase will continue is a controversial and exciting question. If it continues at the same rate as during the past 250 years, halv of those born this year will live to experience their 100th birthday.
