Sammanfattning

The renal function is essential for health. A deteriorated renal function comprises a great risk for severe disease and preterm mortality, mainly from cardiovascular causes. To properly assess the renal function in clinical daily practice is of great importance for many reasons, one being the proper and safe dosage of drug. In recent years new methodologies and formulas has been developed in order to quantify the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using easily sampled plasma samples and analyzing creatinine or Cystatin C. Although different experts and reports advocate the use of either creatinine or Cystatin C there is yet no consensus. A scientific task group with members from various pertinent medical specialties has now been formed under The Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (SBU) and given the task to assess which method and formula that can best be used to assess GFR. The final report is planned to be available in late 2011. A web address to a simple quiz to test the reader´s capacity to estimate GFR from basal clinical data is given, www.sbu.se/njurfunktion.
