Sepsis is the 13th most costly DRG group of inpatient care in Sweden. It is a dynamic condition that may lead to circulatory collapse, multiorgan failure and death with or without concurrent bacteremia. The diagnosis of severe sepsis and septic shock is not dependent on blood culture results. An infection that has progressed to severe sepsis and septic shock is associated with increased mortality and utilization of healthcare resources. The supplementary diagnostic codes R65.1 and R57.2 should be used for severe sepsis and septic shock, respectively.
