Sammanfattning
Research shows both a relationship between physical activity and the reduction of side effects during cancer treatment and that cancer patients can increase their physical capacity and achieve improved well-being and quality of life. A reduced risk of cancer relapse has also been observed. In addition, patients have expressed a desire for a physical activity programme during hospital admission.
The purpose of the "Exercise in the hospital" project was to give cancer patients the opportunity for physical activity during their stay as well as providing them with knowledge about and motivation for exercising after discharge. Another reason was that cancer patients experienced fewer treatment side effects.
An exercise regime was set up for hospitalized cancer patients consisting of group exercise supervised by a physiotherapist and an individualized home training program. The patients had the opportunity to excercise under supervision and receive guidance, courage and inspiration for being physically active between hospitalizations.
Questionnaire results showed that the patients experienced improvement in their physical and mental condition, especially concerning tiredness, pain, nausea, sleep and mood.
