The article describes a project in which bone marrow cancer patients receive chemotherapy at home. The purpose of the project is to investigate how chemotherapy at the patient's home can be provided, because treatment at home is presumed to affect the number of outpatient visits. The project is evaluated based in part on assessment panels, and in part on a quantitative analysis of the number of home treatments versus hospital treatments, objectively measured.
The results show that home treatment can be a safe alternative to hospital treatment, provided there is close cooperation among patients, nurses and physicians and that an experienced haematology nurse carries out the treatment. Simultaneously, home treatment can reduce the number of ambulatory visits the patient needs to make, even if not to the extent desired, which was due to cancellations of treatments and the course of treatment.
