Sammanfattning

In spite of a welcome reduction in the number of people newly infected with HIV world-wide, the level is still high 30 years into the pandemic and counted in millions annually. This also applies to AIDS-related deaths, despite the availability of life-saving treatment. With no cure or vaccine in sight, the world will have to live with HIV/AIDS for a long time to come. Vertical transmission of HIV from mother to child and intergenerational transmission from older men to young women are obstacles in attempting to stop the pandemic. The women in turn contribute to further transmission and their children risk being infected and continuing the transmission chain. It would be possible to halt vertical transmission if only the political will to do so had existed.
