Sammanfattning

Last autumn a woman was “attacked” by a female bot fly, presumably a moose bot fly (Cephenemyia ulrichii) in a forest in central Sweden. The fly was hovering close to the woman’s face and suddenly ejected “several microscopic larvae” into one of her eyes. About 30 whitish larvae were removed with ear tops from the eye, but she had a persistent feeling of “creeping larvae” in the eye and nose. Later that day two more larvae were removed from the eye. Three similar, previously published cases of human external ophthalmomyiasis took place in the late summer in Finland. Prompt removal of the bot fly larvae from the infested eye appears, in general, to lead to complete and rapid recovery. Moose bot fly larvae are common parasites of moose (Alces alces) in north and central Sweden. Last year, however, C. ulrichii was on three occasions recorded for the first time from Småland, south Sweden.
