Sammanfattning
Background: Studies show that parents of seriously ill and chronic sick children often experience a great deal of strain. They need emotional
support and information during the children’s hospitalization. Parent support groups can provide opportunity to share feelings, knowledge and
coping strategies.
Aim: The aim of the study was to find out if parents of children with different diagnoses, hospitalized in different departments participated in
support groups that focus on coping and how parents evaluated the group meetings.
Method: Weekly group meetings were performed 23 times. They where conducted by an experienced nurse and a co-leader. By the end of each
group meeting, the parents where asked to complete an evaluation form.
Findings: Relatively few parents attended compared to how many who got invitation. A total of 96 parents from 11 different departments
participated over a period of ten months. The Questionnaire was completed by 83 parents (87%). However all (100%) parents who evaluated
the group meetings found them to be useful and supportive. Forty eight parents (58%) said they got new ideas about how to cope with their
challenging life and 43 parents (52%) wrote what new ideas they had got.
Conclusion: The evaluation of the parents who choose to participate, confirms that there is need for parent support groups in hospitals that
focus on coping strategies.
