Sammanfattning

Postoperative pain still represents a clinical problem. Several studies have identified a correlation between perceived intensity of postoperative pain, and, surgical procedure, age, gender, psychological factors, preoperative pain, experimental pain sensitivity and genetic factors. Prediction of postoperative pain has the potential to identify patients without satisfactory effect of the pain management and to individually tailor the analgesic regimen. Individualized postoperative pain management may decrease the risk of complications related to acute pain or opioid treatment. Adequate treatment of acute postoperative pain may also lower the risk of developing chronic postoperative pain. A number of predictive variables are already known, but translation of this research into reliable devices or methods is needed, in order to improve postoperative care of our patients.
