Sammanfattning

The death risk for children in traffic has decreased enormously in Sweden the last 60 years. The present study included data from 1172 cases treated at Umeå University Hospital for 1999-2008. The annual injury incidence was 5.7 per 1000 children and bicycling caused 75% of all incidents. The proportion of non minor injuries (MAIS 2+) was about 30 percent for all categories except for car occupants (9%). Preventive measures would firstly be focused on these injuries. Consequently bicyclists need most attention as they had 4.4 times more MAIS 2+ injuries than all other road user categories together. The risk for car occupants was extremely low (0.7 per 10 000 children and year) indicating safe cars and child restraints. Child pedestrians were injured and killed by motor vehicles; one was killed by a drunk driver and one in connection with a school bus transport, indicating that these incidents also need attention.
