Sammanfattning
One study shows how group therapy for children strengthens the child's ability to cope with daily life after a mother's or father's death. The children meet together every other week for two hours. The group is led by trained staff who are responsible for the scope and content of the discussion. Analyses of the group's minutes have identified the following themes that children find crucial to discuss:
Self-recognition reflected in others' experiences.
The group is a haven
The group fosters growth
My deceased parents' significance for my future
The new family
Cooperating with the remaining parent.
The children describe how working within the group for about a year provided an overview of grief process they have been through. Offering and securing a framework in which children can receive support in processing their grief after having lost a mother or father should be part of nurses' professional skills. This skill can be developed in a cross-disciplinary collaboration among nurses, psychologists and/or clergy. Alternatively, it should be standard procedure to referral to other relevant providers.
