Sammanfattning
Islam is the second largest religion in Sweden, with estimated more than 350 000 Muslims. Fasting Ramadan, a month every year, is obligatory for healthy adult Muslims where no food or drink consumed from dawn to sunset. The first meal that breaks fasting is at sunset (Ifatr) and last meal is as late as pre-dawn (Suhur). Fasting hours in Sweden varies widely depending on the time of the year, as Ramadan comes 11-12 days earlier every year. Many of the diabetic patients should not fast Ramadan, but well controlled type 2 diabetes is not a contraindication. Many of the patients who are advised not to fast Ramadan still do. Consulting the treating physician prior to Ramadan start, regular measurements of plasma glucose and regular contact with the treating diabetes team during fasting month are essential measures to avoid short and long term complications.
