Sammanfattning

Complementary and alternative medicine is increasingly used in the Western world. As a result an increasing number of adverse reactions have been reported. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of contact dermatitis caused by topically applied complementary and alternative medicine approved by the Swedish Medical Products Agency. Four topically administered products of complementary and alternative medicine are registered in Sweden by the Swedish Medical Product Agency. Herstat (with Propolis as the active substance), Tea Tree Oil (extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia), Oleum salvum (with Peppermint oil, Cajeput oil, Eucalyptus oil as the active ingredients) and Efabene (extracted from Solanum dulcamara). Searches in the database PubMed were conducted for each product and the active substance. The following prevalence figures were found: Propolis 1,2-6,4%, Tea Tree Oil 0-26%. Eucalyptus 0,54-1,5%. Peppermint 0-5,0%. Regarding Cajeput and Solanum dulcamara no studies about contact allergy were found.
