Sammanfattning
In a point-prevalence study of 16089 elderly in long-term municipality care in Region Västra Götaland Sweden 2009, 4.2 percent had antibiotic treatment in comparison with 5.3 percent in 2004. The decrease in antibiotic treatment of urinary tract infections was most accentuated, from 1.9 percent in 2004 to 1.2 percent in 2009. Skin and soft tissue infections (40 %) were the major indication for antibiotic treatment followed by urinary tract infections (29 %) and respiratory infections (15 %). The adherence to national guidelines for antibiotic treatment was better in 2009 with less fluoroquinolone and cephalosporine use and augmented penicillin use. Hygiene risk factors such as having a wound or an indwelling urinary catheter were much more common in patients receiving antibiotics.
