Sammanfattning
The article describes how staff at Hvidovre Hospital have taken yet another step towards improving safety for patients undergoing surgical procedures. Up to March 2009, Hvidovre Hospital used "The Five Steps" to ensure patient safety. "The Five Steps" were introduced at Hvidovre Hospital in 2005 based on recommendations from the Danish National Board of Heath. The WHO Safe Surgery Checklist is a development of "The Five Steps" model, which was implemented at the Central Surgical Department, Hvidovre Hospital at the end of March 2009. The implementation concluded at the end of 2009 and the checklist became a permanent element of patient safety measures within the Central Surgical Department’s four specialist areas, as well as within anaesthesia. When the implementation period commenced we recorded a 100 per cent use of all five points in the checklist for one in five patients. Today, four out of five patients undergo checking of all five points. During this period, the number of reported adverse perioperative events increased, in part because the staff were more aware of the conditions required for such an event to exist or not.
