Sammanfattning

Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) occurs in 10-30% of patients on chronic lithium therapy. The management of this side effect is only rudimentally described in the literature and the results of surgery have hitherto been reported in only 5 small series with short follow-up. In this paper, we present the results of 78 operations in 71 patients with the condition after more than 6 years of follow-up. It is shown that a majority of these patients has a multiglandular disease and that conventional parathyroid surgery leads to poor long-term results with persistence (recurrence) in more than half of the patients.
