Sammanfattning

The number of stroke patients will increase due to an aging population. Oral health should be focused in stroke care as are dysfagia and nutrition. The impact on oral health depends on the existence of facial paresis, arm paresis, impaired cognition, depression etc. Patient integrity sometimes hinder the staff from helping them with oral care. The National Quality Register of Riks-Stroke, which registers about 83 percent of all stroke cases in Sweden, has performed 1-year- followups after stroke in 2009 and in 2010. Sixty-five percent answered “yes” on the question “Have you visited your dentist/hygienist during the last year?” However, we do not know why they did so and nor why the other 35 percent did not. Evidence-based knowledge about the relation between stroke and oral health has to be increased by clinical research and education both in the acute phase at the hospitals´ stroke-units, in primary health care, and in community care. Better cooperation between health care and dental care is recommended.
