Sammanfattning

GDT is a method for providing patients undergoing surgery with an optimal amount of intravenous fluid. Small bolus doses of colloid fluid are administered until cardiac output, according to the Frank-Starling mechanism, does not increase. The belief is that the perfusion of the body regions should then be is as good as possible About 15 studies show that GDT reduces surgical complications and/or the length of hospital stays. Associated problems are mainly technical and economical, but GDT has become an increasingly viable option as guide for fluid therapy along with the development of minimally invasive methods to measure cardiac output. Pulse oximetry and urine sampling are potential alternatives to cardiac output monitoring as they can make GDT simple enough to be a treatment option for larger patient groups.
