Sammanfattning
The article describes how follow-up telephone contact is practiced in respect of female patients having undergone surgery for gynaecological cancer. Several evidence-based studies show that follow-up telephone contact undertaken by nurses on cancer patients is an appropriate and effective method of supporting the patients through rehabilitation. Follow-up telephone contact meets the patients’ needs and identifies any nursing problems.
On ward Y5, Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby, contact nurses offer female patients two follow-up telephone calls after discharge, irrespective of whether the surgery was curative or whether the patient requires adjunctive therapy. These conversations usually take place one week after results of microscopy are received and one month thereafter. The figure illustrates how the follow-up telephone calls are made, as well as the issues most commonly discussed. The follow-up telephone calls are demonstrated by virtue of two case histories and understood via the theoretical terms Illness and Disease. The nurses consider the follow-up telephone calls an important and meaningful nursing task.
