Sammanfattning

A review over current status of drugs of abuse testing is given. Drugs of abuse testing of today is established as a valuable mean of detecting illicit drug use and has important clinical and forensic applications. The testing should only be used when reliable information of past drug use is needed. In clinical situations unconfirmed positive results from screening or on-site testing is used, which calls for cautiousness since false results are common. Testing is usually performed using urine samples but blood, oral fluid, sweat and hair may also be used. New methodological developments in mass spectrometry and the advent of new misused substances often sold over the Internet will make mass spectrometry more important also for screening purposes in the future. A new discovery of using breath as a sample for narcotics may offer a new and potentially convenient sample for drug testing.
