Sammanfattning

Swedish bariatric surgery has a continuous and coherent development from small bowel bypass during the seventies, via gastroplasty in the eighties to present gastric bypass. After the report on obesity 2002 a tenfold increase in obesity surgery was observed. An important basis for this expansion was the strong level of evidence regarding the effects upon mortality, co-existing diseases and quality of life. The Swedish SOS-study has been of great importance in this aspect. The strong expansion was to a great deal explained by the shift to laparoscopic surgery with increased efficiency: shorter operation times and hospital stay, and less complications. Re-prioritizing within upper abdominal surgery and new resources due to waiting time warrants have also been of importance.
