Sammanfattning
Health literacy comprises skills in obtaining, understanding and acting on information about health issues in ways that promote and maintain health. Requirements for health literacy are individual cognitive and social skills as well as the easy access to understandable, relevant and trustworthy information. A lack of health literacy may have effects at both the individual and societal levels. In the health care limited health literacy may be an underestimated cause of difficulties in treatment and rehabilitation. The individual needs some level of health literacy to self promote health and solve health issues and to be an active partaker in the choice of treatments and health decisions. A complex perspective on health literacy means viewing it as a phenomenon that fluctuates depending on situation and context.
