Non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema as a complication of salicylate toxicity is well documented. Known risk factors are advanced age, smoking, chronic intoxication, metabolic acidosis and proteinuria. Central to the pathophysiology is a change in vascular permeability in the lungs. Early diagnosis and proper treatment is vital. In addition to symptomatic treatment, preventing further absorption and taking measures to enhance excretion of already absorbed salicylate is of great importance.
