Sammanfattning
There is increasing evidence that pharmaceuticals reach the environment not only through excretion from usage, but also via direct releases from their manufacturing. In fact, the concentrations of pharmaceuticals found in surface, ground and drinking water contaminated by industrial releases in some cases exceed, by many orders of magnitude, the levels found in environments contaminated by human excretion (sewage effluents). Such level of pollution is expected to have considerable effects on the environment, possibly also involving direct and indirect effects on human health. Releases of extraordinary high levels of antibiotics lead to the promotion of antibiotic resistance in exposed environmental bacterial communities, stressing the risk for resistance spreading to human pathogens. To limit the environmental impact and reduce risks for further accelerating resistance development, measures to reduce releases of pharmaceuticals from manufacturing are recommended.
