Sammanfattning

The World Bank and WHO have alerted the international community of the deteriorating health among youth in the world. Young people in the age range 15-24 has had less improvement in health than those younger. The etiology of morbidity and mortality has changed. Accidents is the most common cause of mortality in almost every part of the world. Infectious diseases are the second most common causes of death in low-income countries, while suicide is the second most commmon cause in the industrialized parts of the world including Sweden. Many psychiatric disorders appear during adolescence, even if they might not be discovered until later in life. The social networks of young people, their behavior and society itself may be influenced and changed, which means that prevention and health promotion might improve their behaviour. Research and the development of health promoting methods specifically for young people is one of the priorities of WHO today. The advance in the knowledge of the brain maturing into the twenties means that there is a need for the development of new methods to be developed to improve their health and health behaviour.
