Sammanfattning

The aim of the EURIKA study was to assess the achievement of the treatment goals for CVD risk factors among patients with varying degrees of CVD risk. The study was conducted simultaneously in 12 European countries and engaged a representative sample of over 600 physicians and a total of 7641 patients. Data were collected from a visit at the outpatient clinic and from the patient files. The result showed an unsatisfactory control of CVD risk factors: 39% of the patients with hypertension were at target bloodpressure levels, 41% of those with hyperlipidemia were at target for total- and LDL-cholesterol and a mere 37% of patients with type II diabetes mellitus had acceptable HbA1c levels. Even patient information was lacking in many countries. The Swedish cohort showed a similar outcome as in the entire population but control of hypertension and diabetes mellitus was below the average European level. Thus, EURIKA has shown that there is a substantial need, even in Sweden, for efforts to close the gap between the goals for CVD prevention and the outcome in clinical practice.
