Introduction: Learning in clinical placement is a core element in development of competent and independent physiotherapists. Knowledge about learning processes in clinical placement is important to universities and workplaces in organizing of clinical education. The aim of this article is to present knowledge about what students perceive as important to own learning.
Main section: The article presents and discusses the following categories: «I learn when I am active», «I learn in open working environments», «I learn when I have enough time and space», «I learn when meeting patients» and «I learn when there is a balance between challenge and support».
Summing up: Essential to students learning is a well-functioning interaction between the student, the supervisor and the task. However, the students must recognize that own activity is decisive to learning. It is important that the students are challenged both professionally and personally and that they experience trust and mastering in the practice setting.
