High blood pressure is the most prevalent reason for visits to primary care in Sweden. Globally it is the largest single modifiable cause of cardiovascular disease and mortality. In addition to the level of blood pressure other risk factors should be taken into consideration when deciding on intervention. The beneficial effects of lowering blood pressure are very well documented and the risk for vascular events related to hypertension can be almost eliminated by normalizing blood pressure. The present armamentarium for treatment of high blood pressure has the potential, especially when used in wise combinations, to achieve this in the vast majority of hypertensive patients. Despite this there are still patients that are not treated in an optimal way and have poor control of blood pressure and other risk factors. Thus efforts are still needed to increase awareness of the problem and appropriate ways to deal with it.
