Sammanfattning
The results of organ transplantation in Sweden are excellent and the survival has improved, thus more patients with functioning grafts are to be seen by GPs, and others not involved in the daily care of transplanted patients. It is particularly important to keep the immunosuppressive therapy continuously ongoing, avoiding the risk for rejection of the graft. Many of the immunosuppressive agents interact with several other drugs, herbs and even some foods. Infectious complications are quite common in the early period after transplantation, however not uncommon in the later stages. Other complications to long-lasting immunosuppressive therapy include higher risk of cardiovascular events, diabetes mellitus, overweight, osteoporosis, skeletal-fractures and malignancies. Recurrence of the disease which resulted in organ failure with subsequent need for a transplant is seen in some instances. There are several issues to be aware of, but never hesitate to contact the transplant physician or department when in doubt!
