Sammanfattning
Posttraumatic stress disorder is not only a result of war and disasters, but of everyday violence and abuse. Frequently violence takes place in spheres where we are supposed to feel safe; home, school and working place. Care-givers in psychiatry need to investigate, in a systematic way, the presence and effect of previous traumatic events among their patients. Early diagnosis and intervention prevent the outcome of long-standing disorders. Knowledge regarding treatment is increasing at high speed but researchers now need to focus on complex forms of PTSD.
