Sammanfattning

The aim was to study the occurrence of illegitimate tasks (unnecessary and unreasonable tasks) and their relationship to stress and mental exhaustion. A random sample of about 10 percent of the physicians in the Swedish Medical Association’s membership directory was drawn. 1534 persons responded to a questionnaire (response rate 53 percent). Illegitimate tasks were strongly related to stress and mental exhaustion. In the group with high level of unreasonable tasks the risk ratio for mental exhaustion was 5.24 (CI 3.61-7.62). More than 50 percent in that group reported that they often were totally exhausted at the end of the workday and 37 percent felt that they often were near the limit of what they could manage. Stress-related cognitive problem were much more frequent in the group with high levels of illegitimate tasks, 29 percent compared with 6 percent among those with low levels of illegitimate tasks.
