Sammanfattning
Aim: The aim of the study was to explore how nurses experience the use of coercion towards persons with dementia in everyday situations.
Background: Coercion is frequently used in dementia care in nursing homes, and is especially related to the patient’s resistance to everyday
activities. There is however still a lack of knowledge about how nurses experience the use of coercion in everyday situations.
Method: Eight nurses in dementia care were interviewed using a qualitative life world research-design. A hermeneutic approach was used in
the analysis.
Findings: The nurses described several nuances of how use of coercion affected them as professionals. They experienced not being able to
understand the patient, at the same time as they were responsible for patient’s negative sense. The nurse’s attitude towards and ability to
interact with the patient in everyday practice colored their justification of coercion as beneficial and made them hold out the patients anger.
The nurses described shortage of resources and competence as an important reason for use of coercion. As a whole the nurses experience the
use of coercion towards persons with dementia as the battle for beneficence.
Conclusion: The battle for beneficence can be founded on uncertainty regarding what is considered best for the patient.
