Sammanfattning
Aim: As part of the Danish national patient satisfaction survey 2009 the region of South Denmark received 9007 critical comments from in- and out patients. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of comments regarding continuity of care and to categorise comments into different types of continuity. Methods: By systematic random selection, two samples of each 100 were drawn of each 100 critical comments from in- and outpatients respectively. Four independent observers assessed the comments. Observers were asked to place the comments into one of four categories: Relational continuity, information continuity, management continuity or no relation to continuity. Observer variation was assessed using Kappa statistics. Results: On average 38% of comments from in-patients and 47% of comments from out-patients were categorized as comments related to continuity of care. For both groups seven out of ten were classified as related to management continuity. Kappa values showed slight to moderate interobserver agreement. Conclusion: Analysis and categorization of patients’ comments are difficult. However, this study confirms that continuity of care is important for many patients. Solving problems of continuity requires focus on logistics, care planning and professional cooperation.
