Sammanfattning
Maternal mortality is only one expression of ill health during pregnancy. The unborn baby’s health and survival are related intimately with the pregnant woman’s health.
The last decades have made us understand that »MCH« (the mother with baby on her back) is a simplified dyad of »maternal and child health« and does not put maternal death in focus: when maternal death occurs, there is never the child on mother’s back.
The vast majority of women who die a maternal death are low-risk women, implying that the expression »all women are at risk« is more relevant than to adhere to the concept of “high” risk.
There are more deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth than from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined, if you include the approximately 6 million stillborns and liveborns who die shortly after birth.
The total cost for the expansion of national health systems to achieve MDG 5 in the 49 poorest countries would require 75 billion per year in 2015, which would more than double of what is spent today (about $ 31 billion per years)
