Sammanfattning
In Norway almost half the bachelor degree courses in nursing take place in clinical practice, under the supervision of nurses. Nursing students have experienced that nurses do not show enough awareness of the importance of their supervisory role and that this reduces the learning opportunities. The aim of this study was to shed light on the experience of supervision in hospital practice in a group of nursing students. Eight nursing students were interviewed individually. Together they had experienced clinical practice in 10 different hospital wards in two hospitals in Norway. The interviews were analyzed using Giorgi’s phenomenological research method. The nursing students described the supervision as positive when they felt that they were both seen and heard, experienced predictability and felt a sense of achievement. They also experienced the supervision positively when they were allowed to be present in real learning situations, in order to acquire skills. When these aspects were not present, the students described the supervision as negative. It is desirable that this study could lead to an increased awareness, reflection and support of the role and function nurses have as supervisors.
