Sammanfattning
Several studies have showed that persons with mental illness generally have lower self-esteem than the rest of the population. Low self-esteem and doubts about personal mastery reduce quality of life and increase mental illness symptoms. Numerous studies have also shown that social skills training increases self-esteem, and a few studies have indicated that karate can have the same effect. The purpose of this study was to examine how a training-program consisting of social skills training combined with karate, affects the self-esteem of people with mental illness. It is a qualitative study, where eight participants who have been through a program of social skills training and karate, were interviewed in a focus group. All had increased their self-esteem, experienced less shame, got a stronger identity feeling, and a feeling of increased personal mastery. This had resulted in a feeling of stronger basic security, which again led to more freedom in their daily lives. Karate combined with social skills training may therefore prove to be a positive contribution to the patient’s recovery.
