Sammanfattning

Loperamide is an opioid-like anti diarrhoeal drug. At low dosage, its effect is mostly anti secretory with very limited effect on bowel motility. At higher dosages, bowel motility is affected, with longer intestinal transit time, which may increase exposure of the intestinal mucosa to bacterial toxins, in case of bacterial gastroenteritis. In our literature review, we found that a maximum of 8 mg loperamide per day up to 2 days is a safe and efficient treatment for tourist diarrhoea, both as single treatment and as adjunctive treatment in combination with antibiotics. According to a survey, which was randomly sent to 100 physicians at all Swedish departments of Infectious Diseases, loperamide was rarely prescribed for treatment of tourist diarrhoea.
