Sammanfattning
Affective syndromes such as unipolar and bipolar disorders cause suffering as well as costs for society, partly because of the elevated mortality it entails. Depression is associated with an increased mortality, mainly because of the excess of suicides, but also due to cardiovascular complications. The lifetime prevalence of fulfilled suicide can be as high as 7-8% in severe depression. Some of the risk factors for suicide in affective disorders is feelings of hopelessness, high levels of anxiety, insomnia and psychiatric co-morbidity including alcohol dependence. The treatment of patients with affective disorders should in all stages include a careful assessment of the risk of suicide.
