Sammanfattning
Benign prostatic obstruction is a common disorder. The drug sales in Sweden indicates that around 100 000 men receive pharmacotherapy. Annually 4 500 men receive surgery. The Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (SBU) systematically reviewed the scientific literature on the topic and published its report in the autumn of 2011.
A large share of these patients can be managed through primary care. Patients are usually treated based on a probable diagnosis, and only a small percentage undergoes urodynamic examination to verify the diagnosis.
Patients experiencing mild bother require no treatment. For moderate to severe bother, the choice is between mild, less-effective treatment (pharmacotherapy) and more invasive, but much more effective, treatment (surgery).
