Sammanfattning
In this article we compare and discuss three previously published cases of phenibut withdrawal. Phenibut is a GABAB agonist that was developed in Soviet in the 1960’s. In Russia it is used in clinical practice to treat, for example, anxiety and alcohol withdrawal syndrome. In Europe and in USA phenibut is available on the Internet and marketed as a nutritional supplement for improved sleep. The case reports describe a rapid tolerance development and potentially severe withdrawal symptoms, similar to those seen in baclofen, GHB, benzodiazepine and alcohol withdrawal. Symptoms range from subjective experiences of stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and palpitations to objective symptoms such as tremor, agitation, hallucinations and confusion. Benzodiazepines and supportive care seems to be the most effective choice of treatment for objective abstinence symptoms.
