Sammanfattning
The presented research is underpinned by the idea that depression has an existential dimension and that meaning can be discovered or created by active or passive experience in nature. Two studies with single-group design explored whether individuals with clinical depression experienced mental health and existential benefits in relation to participation in horticultural activities. Measures pertaining to depression severity and existential issues were obtained before and after a twelve-week therapeutic horticulture program and at a three-month follow-up. Depression severity declined significantly during the intervention and remained low at the follow-up stage in both studies. The existential outcomes did not change significantly in the studies; however, there was a correlation between the changes that occurred during the intervention, with changes in depression severity. The subjective experience of therapeutic horticulture was described as meaningful with a positive influence on the participants’ view of life.
