Sammanfattning

The function of intensive care nurses is complex, and involves interaction with relatives, as well as advanced patient care. Research shows that interaction with relatives in intensive care units (ICU) is important for the patient and the family, but studies focusing on the nurses’ experiences are sparse. The purpose of this study was to shed light on and interpret a group of nurses’ experiences of being in interaction with relatives in intensive care units. Six intensive nurses from two Norwegian hospitals were interviewed, and a phenomenological hermeneutic method was used in the analyses of the transcribed texts. The structural analysis resulted in five main themes: creating an inclusive, identity-preserving atmosphere; finding balance between opportunities and limitations; a mutually dependency relationship; to experience coping; and to create confidence and trust. The study showed that the interaction with relatives in ICU was experienced as a balance between the competence in handling advanced technological advices and the ability to be concerned and provide thoughtful care. The ability to use different types of competences in each individual practice situation, and the ability to prepare for a relationship marked by trust and confidence, was highly emphasized.
