Sammanfattning

ST-doctors believe scientific courses should relate more to everyday practice The new regulations and general guidelines for doctors’ specialist medical training, issued in 2008 by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare, stipulate that the trainee should acquire a scientific approach, by attending a course and by carrying out an individual written work. However, it is unclear what is meant by the goal. This is reflected in the various specialist societies’ different directives and the disparities in the design of the courses provided. These courses have not always lived up to trainee-doctors’ expectations. Two focus group interviews with trainee-doctors from various specialities reveal that ST-doctors believe it is important to acquire a scientific and critical way of thinking in order to be able to examine their own practice and to respond adequately to the patients’ questions, but that the education during the scientific courses should relate more to their own everyday practice than is today the case. An alternative course in scientific methodology is presented.
