Sammanfattning
Cardiac myxomas are the most common primary cardiac tumor in adults. Myxomas occur most frequently in the third to the sixth decades of life with a female predominance. More than 75% of myxomas are located in the left atrium and can be diagnosed with echocardiography. One third of patients with a myxoma in the left atrium present with neurologic symptoms most often TIA or stroke. Multiple, peripheral cerebral aneurysm are an uncommon but well recognized complication of cardiac myxomas. Surgical resection is curative and the recurrence rate is low. During 2004-2011, 36 patients were operated on for a cardiac myxoma at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. The thirteen patients who presented with neurologic symptoms are reported.
