Sammanfattning

Overdose mortality continues to be prevalent among heroin users in Sweden. Internationally, naloxone education and distribution has been successfully implemented and tested, in order for overdose bystanders to prevent death in affected individuals. The present pilot study of 50 opiate-dependent patients in substitution treatment, describes overdose history, measures taken at witnessed overdose events, and attitudes towards naloxone education and distribution. Fourty-seven patients had ever witnessed another person’s heroin overdose, and incorrect or dangerous actions were common, including the administration of other drugs. Ambulances were often not called. Ninety percent reported they would have been willing to join a naloxone program. This study, novel to the Swedish setting, suggests that naloxone education and distribution may be feasible for overdose mortality prevention.
