Sammanfattning

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a common condition affecting 2–6 % of the general population. The core symptoms are difficulties discarding possessions, due to a perceived need to save them, and distress associated with discarding resulting in cluttering of living areas. While previously considered a subtype of OCD, research shows that it is a separate condition which is to be included as a separate disorder in the upcoming DSM-5. Comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception, and major depressive disorder and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder occur frequently with HD. During assessment several medical and other psychiatric conditions should be ruled out as the primary causes of HD if it is to be diagnosed. Presently, there are few available effective treatment options, but some pharmacological options and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have shown promise. Effective treatment and management of HD is likely to require the implementation of multi-disciplinary teams.
